Food for Thought Community Fund

Addressing a broad set of food insecurity needs within HSE schools

Established in 2021, the Food for Thought Community Fund was created thanks to a generous donation by a local community member who is dedicated to supporting food insecurity needs for students and families within HSE Schools. Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation and Fishers Youth Assistance Program partnered together on ways to best support food insecurity needs for local families.

In January 2024, Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation wrote a check using Food for Thought Fund donations for $25,107.18 to help clear outstanding meal balances for more than 1,200 Hamilton Southeastern Schools students!

The Food for Thought Community Fund supports:

  • Food pantries housed within HSE Schools
  • Outstanding lunch account balances for low to middle income families in need
  • Community food pantries serving HSE students and families
  • Snack Attack program, led by Fishers Youth Assistance, which currently serves nearly 500 students
  • Summer Meals Program, led by Fishers Youth Assistance, which served 757 students in 2021
  • Courier/Transportation needs for food delivery
  • Transportation/storage assistance for HSEF Turnover Hunger food drive
  • Turnover Hunger 2024 collected 14,624 snack items
  • Since 2021, Turnover Hunger has collected 94,998 snack items!

Food for Thought is made possible through support by local community partners including: Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation, Fishers Youth Assistance Program, Meijer and Ascension St. Vincent.

Project Hope

A scholarship fund sponsoring access to school-based mental health care for students of HSE schools

Project Hope was founded in the fall of 2019, a few years after the partnership between Hamilton Southeastern Schools and Community Health Network was formed. There was a noticeable gap in services for students that did not have insurance coverage, and therefore were unable to access care. A group of passionate advocates and community organizations, including Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation, The Peyton Riekhof Foundation, Fishers Youth Assistance Program, and Optimist Club of Fishers, came together to work towards a solution.

Through generous donations from local non-profits, grant funding, and other community-sponsored fundraisers, Project Hope has provided more than 90 students access to more than 1,000 school-based mental health session services since it began in 2019.

Students can be referred for the scholarship by school staff or Community Health therapists in the building. In order to qualify, the student must not have any active insurance, or their insurance may not have mental health coverage. There must also be demonstrated financial need. The scholarship committee reviews applications and approves students to begin services.

Students may discontinue use of scholarship funding when any of the following criteria are met: student obtains active insurance, student successfully meets treatment goals and no longer requires the service, or the student/family choose to discontinue services.
