Mindfulness in Schools
Sep 12, 2017Mindfulness in the Classroom
Mindfulness is defined as the quality or state of being conscious or aware. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Focusing your energy and thoughts on the present and pausing for a moment of calm is something we could all do better. With standardized testing on the rise and increased academic pressure, today’s student can greatly benefit from mindfulness.
This past spring faculty members from Fall Creek Intermediate (FCI) and Riverside Intermediate (RSI) pursued professional development from Mindful Schools and introduced mindfulness to students and families. The intermediate years are such a pivotal time in a student’s life that teaching this positive coping strategy couldn’t come at a better time. The practice is shown to produce powerful, long-term benefits for students both academically and emotionally.
As part of their efforts FCI and RSI hosted Journey of the Heart, Mind & Soul, an event that welcomed all intermediate families to explore hands-on experiences that focused on happiness, joy, and engagement. The event also offered special presentations on topics such as safe social media, growth mindset, suicide prevention, building healthy relationships, positive body image, and anxiety.
While Journey of the Heart, Mind & Soul launched a campaign of mindfulness in school classrooms, the journey is far from over. By supporting professional development opportunities, HSSF is ensuring that educators can continue to incorporate mindfulness in the classroom for years to come. The program is also prepared to expand to include HSE Intermediate and Junior High as well as Sand Creek Intermediate.
Generous support from donors like you allow HSE Schools to focus on the whole child and support healthy growth and development for all of our district’s students. For that, we thank you!
