Spaghetti and Football

Sep 07, 2014

Admittedly, pasta and football appears to be a curious combination.  Yet, there is method to this madness.  Mudsock week plays out the epic rivalry between Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School athletics.  The culmination of the week often occurs on the football field where nearly 10,000 spectators crowd under the Friday night lights to support their team.

While the competition is great fun, the schools and students knew that collaboration is more powerful than competition.  Combine that spirit with the community service orientation of School Board President, John DeLucia, and PastaBowl was born.

DeLucia comments, “PastaBowl is the biggest food drive associated with high school football that I’m aware of.  It is a fun way to bring the school community together to make a difference for the Fishers Community.”

DeLucia would know.  The current rate of HSE district students receiving free and reduced lunch support is at 14.5%.  A number that has doubled in the last 6 years, and continues to climb.  Though that number is much lower than in other districts, the fact remains that nearly 1 in 5 of our students may struggle with food insecurity.  And the simple truth is when you are hungry, it is hard to learn.

Individual schools have been responsive to the need.  In addition to PastaBowl, many HSE schools operate programs such as Indy Snack Attack, to supply students with food over the weekend when they are not able to eat school meals.  Other schools also build food boxes for students to take home over the 2 week winter break.

The Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation is proud to partner with PastaBowl for our Mudsock Game event.  Combining pasta with football not only helps to stock our local food pantries, but also brings attention to needs of HSE students.  Thanks to PastaBowl, HSE Schools, Township Trustees, Meijer, Fishers Rotary Club, and all the individual pasta donors for helping us make a difference!
